Dr. Jeff McQuillan is one of the Center's most popular presenters. His workshop, "Bringing Struggling Readers up to Grade Level: Effective Strategies for Middle and High School Teachers," has shown thousands of grades 5-12 teachers innovative and classroom-tested strategies for successful literacy instruction.
Dr. Jeff McQuillan received his teaching credential in secondary education, and taught social studies, ESL, reading, and Spanish in public high schools for many years. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Southern California, and was a professor of education at Arizona State University and California State University, Fullerton. He has published widely in the areas of literacy, second language development, and reading acquisition, and his most recent book, The Literacy Crisis: False Claims, Real Solutions, was published by Heinemann. Dr. McQuillan is also the co-author of The Case for Late Intervention: Once a Good Reader, Always a Good Reader, and co-editor of a book on bilingualism entitled Heritage Language Development.
In addition to his scholarly publications, Dr. McQuillan has appeared on CNN, and has been quoted as an expert on education in the Associated Press, Los Angeles Times, and the Orange County Register, among many others. Based in Los Angeles, California, Dr. McQuillan has presented and has been a keynote speaker at a variety of state, national, and international conferences, and frequently gives in-services to teachers on the topics related to literacy and reading acquisition.
